Sam Buganski (b. 1996)  is a ceramic artist whose work explores the space between playful craftsmanship and utilitarian function. Rooted in processes of play and intuitive repetition, his practice embraces clay as both a tactile material and a three-dimensional canvas for surface exploration. Through repetition and improvisation, Buganski constructs forms that balance purpose with whimsy, allowing process to guide both structure and decoration.

His surface designs draw heavily from childhood memory. Underglaze shapes riff on sketches his father once made for sculptures over morning coffee, while his color palette borrows from the visual language of the late 1990s—pink from Barbie packaging, green from John Deere tractors, and orange from weathered traffic cones. These underglaze layers are intentionally whittled away with a fettling knife, revealing textures that recall peeling paint or chipped drywall from home renovations.

Together, these elements form a joyful, camp-inflected material language that honors the past while imbuing the present with levity. Buganski’s work celebrates personal memory as a generative force, finding beauty in the playful reconstruction of identity through material and form.
